Back in the previous century, since the early days of Hollywood motion picture production, there has been a constant search for good scripts and ideas. Although the Hollywood of that time had no source to look up, these days the things drastically changed. In the lack of a good idea, the major studios can always turn to some movie blockbuster from the past within it's own database, within the European or worldwide production or the independent works of the talented authors from USA, even the turkeys that had a good potential but turned out bad. The term 'movie remake' saw the daylight.

What is a remake anyway$%: In general terms, it is a movie based on other movie instead of other media, but not excluded. The reasons to remake a movie can be various, whether it's of pure commercial nature as a plan to repeat the success of the original, or the artistic reasons such as correcting the bad interpretation of a good idea.

First of all, one must take in consideration the scale of the similarity to the original. You can't just borrow the main characters, make another movie and call it a remake - it is closer to sequel. However, some elements from the original movie must be inherited in the remake, especially the synopsis. While deciding which movie is remake and which is not, I take in consideration the similarity between two movies. The Lowest similarity goes to the movie director put just a touch of an original, and the highest goes to shot-by-shot remake.

Regarding to the chronological aspect, one can wonder sometimes which movie is the original and which is the 'clone'. That happened on several occasions in the Hollywood history, but the most recent period was the 1990-ties, when there was a release of 'Wyatt Earp' and 'Tombstone', two movies that could be remakes of each other and '1492: Conquest of Paradise' and 'Christopher Columbus: The Discovery'.

The remake - in general - was made by the director who didn't direct the original, but again, there are exceptions to that rule. Even the greatest movie directors like Alfred Hitchcock remade their own movies because they had the feeling they could do the better job second time, or the producers asked them - like in the case of many European authors who come frequently in Hollywood.

But it works the other way around; are you aware that Turks and Indians have their versions of Superman$%:

The common opinion is that remakes are worse than original and are totally unnecessary. But sometimes they can be better than original, at least they are funnier than original... Let's not forget that remake helps the producers of the original film to squeeze few more bucks by re-distribution and selling copyrights of an original.
